Multisensory Math Instruction
Marian University

Students in this class will learn the essential elements of a multisensory teaching approach for mathematics. Students will study research about how people learn and apply that to developing conceptual understanding of numbers and our number system. Beginning with concrete manipulatives, students will learn to guide student development on to pictorial representations of numbers and operations and eventually to success using the abstract symbols of math. Students will learn to assess student knowledge of math content and math processes focusing on the revisions to Indiana’s Academic Standards for Mathematics. Students will assess mathematics learning, plan for future instruction, assess again and continue the learning cycle through extension or remediation activities.
