![]() ![]() TrainingDII offers Orton-Gillingham Basic Training to educators and individuals interested in becoming a DII multisensory education specialist. Training classes are held during the summer months and twice during the school year. Visit our calendar for upcoming trainings. Basic Orton-Gillingham Instruction in partnership with Marian UniversityIn this 50-hour class, students will develop an understanding of language learning disabilities and learn how to effectively use the Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Instructional Approach. In addition to mastering the sound-symbol relationships of the English language, students will gain an in-depth understanding of the etymology and lexicon associated with English, a skill essential to reading instruction. Students will learn the essential elements of a successful multisensory instructional approach and how to administer and interpret diagnostic assessments in preparing individualized lesson plans, and learn to interpret more extensive professional educational testing. Course content includes direct instruction, small group work, and applied practice of all components of a successful Orton-Gillingham lesson. Multisensory Math Instruction in partnership with Marian UniversityStudents in this class will learn the essential elements of a multisensory teaching approach for mathematics. Students will study research about how people learn and apply that to developing conceptual understanding of numbers and our number system. Beginning with concrete manipulatives, students will learn to guide student development on to pictorial representations of numbers and operations and eventually to success using the abstract symbols of math. Students will learn to assess student knowledge of math content and math processes focusing on the revisions to Indiana’s Academic Standards for Mathematics. Students will assess mathematics learning, plan for future instruction, assess again and continue the learning cycle through extension or remediation activities.
