Training to become an Orton-Gillingham Instructor DII trains its instructors - we provide 44 hours of Orton-Gillingham training, followed by a 7-hour practicum. You would then join DII as an employee and meet your first student! Since we are community-based, you meet with your student at least twice a week at a location that's convenient for the both of you. DII values its tutors; pay rates are highly competitive with market rates for the area. DII also provides continuing professional development opportunities on a regular basis. DII uses the evidence-based Orton-Gillingham approach, which grew out of the work of Dr. Samuel T. Orton (1879-1948) and Anna Gillingham (1878-1964). Dr. Orton, a professor of neuropsychiatry and neuropathology at the Neurological Institute of Columbia University, was a pioneer in focusing attention on language differences by bringing together neuropsychiatric information and principles of remediation. As early as 1925, Dr. Orton had identified the syndrome and offered a physiological explanation with a favorable prognosis. Working with Dr. Orton, Anna Gillingham, with her assistant Bessie W. Stillman, further developed procedures in an organized presentation. Our next class is scheduled for August 18-September 22. It will be held the DII office on Monday and Wednesdays, 9am-1pm.
